Santuvario Producer Profile
<p><glossary title="171">Boca</glossary> is one of Italy's smallest <glossary title="1103">viticultural</glossary> regions, with just 30 <glossary title="523">hectares</glossary> planted and only 15 of those eligible for the <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="1156">DOC</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> Though densely planted with over 1000 <glossary title="523">hectares</glossary> as recently as the 1930's, it was down to only 10 by the early 1990's. In an all too familiar tale, factory jobs led many farmers to progressively abandon their land (sadly, those same jobs are also long gone). Today, in large part due to the wines and promotion of <glossary title="171">Boca</glossary> by Swiss visionary Christoph Künzli, the area has seen an uptick of new talent.</p>
<p>Ivano Barbaglia is certainly one of those up-and-comers. For most of his career, Ivano was a musical instrument repairman. While he enjoyed the work, a stroke in 2011 left him with limited mobility in his right hand. Forced to take a new direction, he started the Santuvario project with a tiny <glossary title="1133">plot</glossary> of family land. Together with his wife Paola, they started with two <glossary title="523">hectares</glossary> of <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="709">Nebbiolo</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="175">Croatina</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="1086">Vespolina</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> <glossary title="1060">Uva Rara</glossary> and <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="424">Erbaluce</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> as well as 50 <glossary title="1208">ares</glossary> planted in 2013 and 2014.</p>
<p>In 2019, they were able to acquire an additional vineyard of very old <glossary title="175">Croatina</glossary> and an additional hill of vines for new plantations. When everything comes into production, this will have doubled the size of the land to four <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="523">hectares</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> </p>
<p>The name Santuvario comes from the gorgeous convent that his family's <glossary title="740">old vines</glossary> overlook. In fact, the "Santuvario<strong> </strong>Rosso<strong>"</strong> <glossary title="573">label</glossary> is actually taken from this arial picture of the convent when it was surrounded in vines:</p>
<p><img src="http://louisdressner.com/uploads/images/article/2019_Dec_02//af/cc/afcc3dfe3ea6c0069df8d7348650961f.jpg" /></p>
<p>The "Santuvario<strong> </strong>Rosso<strong>"</strong> and<strong> "</strong>Gino XVI<strong>" </strong><glossary title="158">Bianco</glossary> come partly from a <glossary title="309">co-planted </glossary>vineyard five kilometers from the house, within a national park in the <glossary title="322">commune</glossary> of <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="615">Maggiora</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> Hidden atop a treacherous hill, one <glossary title="523">hectare</glossary> of isolated vines averaging 40 years grow in <glossary title="1117">volcanic</glossary> <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="816">porphyry</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> The <glossary title="158">Bianco</glossary> goes through one month of <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="610">skin maceration</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> all in <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="986">stainless steel</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> The <glossary title="874">Rosso</glossary> sees a short, 14 day <glossary title="610">maceration</glossary> and <glossary title="441">fermentation</glossary> in <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="986">stainless steel</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> then is <glossary title="74">aged</glossary> for a year in a single large <glossary title="1126">wood</glossary> <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="242">cask</glossary><span>.</span></span></span><br />
<br />
The second major <glossary title="760">parcel</glossary> is next to the Santuario convent, where the <glossary title="427">estate</glossary> gets its name from. Ivano's <glossary title="740">old vines</glossary> grow here in <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="145">basalt</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> <glossary title="909">sand</glossary> and <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="596">limestone</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> When the year permits, a wine called "Lozio" is produced from this land: it is <glossary title="441">fermented</glossary> and <glossary title="74">aged</glossary> in a single <glossary title="142">barrel</glossary> for three years, then <glossary title="74">bottle aged</glossary> one year before release. In addition, a new <glossary title="175">Croatina</glossary> wine was produced in 2019 and will likely be released in 2021.<br />
<br />
Everything is done by hand in the vines: only <glossary title="328">contact treatments</glossary> of <glossary title="333">copper</glossary> and <glossary title="993">sulfur</glossary> are used. The wines are a beautiful, fresh and vivid expression of Italian <span class="zalup"><span> <glossary title="1026">terroir</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> their Northern roots evident in the lower <glossary title="67">ABV</glossary> and textural elegance. It goes without saying that production and what we're able to import is insanely limited.</p>

2023 Harvest Report from Ivano Barbaglia
<p><strong>November 18th, 2023:</strong></p>
<p>Here are our reflections on the year 2023.</p>
<p>Another difficult year, with a dry and warm Spring, then a cold and decidedly rainy May. A very hot July followed, accompanied by strong thunderstorms and <glossary term="Hail" title="1136">hailstorms</glossary> which also hit our vineyards. Sharp drops in temperatures favored the spread of <span class="zalup"><span> <glossary term="Mildew" title="1137">mildew</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> which fortunately was very limited for us. The ancient <glossary term="Training System" title="1039">training system</glossary> of the "maggiorina" has proven essential in protecting at least two sides of the plot from <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Hail" title="1136">hail</glossary><span>!</span></span></span></p>
<p>August and September were variable, with alternating sunny and rainy days which allowed for proper <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Maturation" title="639">maturation</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> We had a very hot October with high temperatures even at night, it really seems that climate change has become a reality. </p>
<p>During the <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Harvest" title="521">harvest</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> every bunch of grapes damaged by the <glossary term="Hail" title="1136">hail</glossary> was cleaned: a meticulous job that took us a lot of effort. In the end, we brought in good, ripe grapes with the right <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Acidity" title="71">acidity</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> Unfortunately, we did not have the sufficient quantity to <glossary term="Vinification" title="1104">vinify</glossary> a pure <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Erbaluce" title="424">Erbaluce</glossary><span>.</span></span></span></p>

2022 Harvest Report from Ivano Barbaglia
<p>They said you need to look back to 1800 to find a hot, dry year like 2022! The months of May, June and July reached 40 degrees with a total <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Drought" title="1167">drought</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> a record! We feared that the <glossary term="Cluster/Bunch" title="1138">bunches</glossary> would wither rather than ripen. Instead, some providential rains in August and September resolved the situation, helping the vines to bring the grapes to optimal <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Maturation" title="639">maturity</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> So we <glossary term="Harvest" title="521">harvested</glossary> beautiful, sweet and very healthy grapes! <p>The 2021 <glossary term="Vintage" title="1109">vintage</glossary> was complicated, it started late with spring <glossary term="Frost" title="1135">frosts</glossary> followed by many rains. A hot and dry summer were punctuated with strong thunderstorms in July, accompanied by important <glossary term="Hail" title="1136">hailstorms</glossary> which fortunately did not hit our area. All this required a lot of attention to the vines. Unfortunately, many rows have been infested with popillia japonica, an insect that is expanding year by year.</p>

2020 Harvest Report from Ivano Barbaglia
<p>We are doing well and the <glossary term="Harvest" title="521">harvest</glossary> was positive. 2020 will remain in everyone's memory for the sad lockdown! Here, the beginning of spring was very dry, this allowed the vines to <glossary term="Flowering" title="1179">flower</glossary> well and have a balanced development, which protected them from the rains in the following months. Fortunately, there was no <glossary term="Hail" title="1136">hail</glossary> and the heavy rains of early October occurred after the <glossary term="Harvest" title="521">harvest</glossary> of the most delicate grapes such as <glossary term="Uva Rara" title="1060">Uva Rara</glossary> and <span class="zalup"><span><glossary term="Vespolina" title="1086">Vespolina</glossary><span>.</span></span></span></p>

<p>The weather was very variable in 2019, though overall we had good weather and mild temperatures. Subsequently, spring became cold and rainy. Fortunately, the hot summer brought the bunches to <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="639">maturity</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> which however had slightly smaller berries than normal.</p>
<p>Our care has been concentrated mainly on the historic vines, the majority of which require a completely manual effort. Snow has already fallen on the mountains near us. The wine now rests in the <glossary title="254">cellar</glossary> and we can't wait to taste it with you!</p>

2018 Harvest Report from Ivano Barbaglia
<p>Before the <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="521">harvest</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> there is always a moment suspended in time, as if we are holding our breath, a kind of anxiety. The gift of nature is always different, and the continued commitment leads to us eagerly awaiting its bounty. How will we remember this year? What will the wine be like?<br />
<br />
We had balanced spring days, no <glossary title="1135">frosts</glossary> and these conditions allowed a good <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="1179">flowering</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> Early in summer there were fresh days alternating with cold, rainy periods and lukewarm ones.<br />
In the middle of summer there were high temperatures that however have never caused suffering to the vines. On the contrary they accompanied the grapes to a regular ripening.<br />
<br />
This vines flourished and were perhaps too vigorous: in fact we intervened to contain the plants and maintain that production not be excessive. In the hills, the dropping temperatures in the night during the last month before the <glossary title="521">harvest</glossary> contributed to the exaltation of the grape's aromas.<br />
<br />
We are happy. It's a good <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="1109">vintage</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> ripe and healthy grapes. Wow, wonderful, what a gift, the <glossary title="254">cellar</glossary> smells amazing!</p>

2017 Harvest Report by Ivano Barbaglia
<p>The distinctive feature of the 2017 <glossary title="1109">vintage</glossary> was the early <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="521">harvest</glossary><span>.</span></span></span> Luckily, neither our vines or the young plantations in the Santuario <glossary title="1133">plot</glossary> were affected by the spring <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="1135">frost</glossary><span>.</span></span></span></p>
<p><br />
It has been a dry, windy year with above-average summer temperatures. A few storms in August threatened to bring <glossary title="1136">hail</glossary> but, luckily, we ended up with just rain, limiting any water stress to the plants. The grapes have ripened and are beautiful, of excellent quality. The 2017 <glossary title="709">Nebbiolo</glossary> is at its best. This is surprising, because the variety is not used to such heat and lack of rain, so the skin of the fruit has thickened and production is more limited than usual. On the other hand, the hot climate favored the white <glossary title="424">Erbaluce</glossary> vines. We completed our <glossary title="521">harvest</glossary> in the beautiful, warm weather of late September - early October, the earliest we've ever picked!<br />
<br />
In the winery, the <glossary title="700">must</glossary> has a very high sugar content and good <span class="zalup"><span> <glossary title="71">acidity</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> particularly for the white. For the first time we are employing and perfecting submerged <glossary title="234">cap</glossary> <glossary title="441">fermentation</glossary> for our white grapes. As usual, allowing the many <glossary title="1010">tannins</glossary> and sugars in her majesty the <glossary title="709">Nebbiolo</glossary> the freedom to express themselves will be a real challenge!</p>

2016 Harvest Report by Ivano Barbaglia
<p>2016 was a strange year with unusual temperatures. Spring was warm and the start of summer was very uncertain, with heavy rain and cold weather. <glossary term="Peronospora" title="1394">Perenospora</glossary> and <glossary title="737">oidium</glossary> swept through many vineyards, although ours were not affected. To keep them safe, we monitored the hillsides constantly to check vines and environmental sustainability. In the end, we were happy to see insects and butterflies in our vineyards!<br />
<br />
August and September were drier and breezier months, which allowed the fruit to ripen on the vine perfectly. This, combined with cooler temperatures at night, made us start to believe that the <glossary title="521">harvest</glossary> would be a good one! Hurrah!<br />
<br />
The late <glossary title="521">harvest</glossary> in October was excellent, with a bigger crop of grapes after the Montalbano vineyard had also been incorporated into our production.</p>
<p>For us personally, the 2016 <glossary title="1109">vintage</glossary> was a difficult and highly demanding one. The road we are pursuing to combine quality and sustainability of our vines has been a rocky but extremely satisfying one!</p>
<p>We are very happy! Back in the winery, nothing is added to our <glossary title="708">natural wine</glossary> to trigger or accelerate <span class="zalup"><span><glossary title="441">fermentation</glossary><span>,</span></span></span> it takes care of everything by itself!</p>
